Ted Lucas studied composition with the renowned teacher Mlle. Nadia Boulanger in Paris, France. After a year of private study with Boulanger, he returned to the USA to pursue his doctorate in composition at the University of Illinois in Champaign-Urbana. Following receipt of his doctorate, he began his career in higher education at the University of Missouri-St. Louis as an Instructor of Music. From there, he was Assistant Professor of Music at Beloit College, Associate Professor and Dean of Fine Arts at Southwestern University, Professor and Director of the School of Music and Dance at San Jose State University, ending his academic career as Founding Provost and Vice President for Academic Affairs at CSU Channel Islands in Camarillo, California. In retirement he lives in Ojai, California, with his wife Judy and their two dogs. He is President of the Board of Directors of the Channel Islands Chamber Orchestra in Ventura, Vice President and Treasurer of Friends of Fieldworkers, Inc., and is Director of Music at All Saints Episcopal Church in Oxnard.
Ted began composing in high school, his first work performed by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra. His compositions have been performed in both Europe and the USA, and many of his choral and instrumental compositions have been published by various publishers. Most of them are available for purchase at this address.
As a violinist, Ted has arranged several works for string quartet. He also arranges works for choir and piano. Many of these can be seen on this page and via this link. Click on the image of the sheet music. One of his most popular arrangements is De Colores, a popular Mexican folk song, for SATB chorus and piano. You can see and hear it here.
